Brief album summaries:

She's So Unusual (1983)

The hits are mighty and turned Cyndi Lauper into an iconic '80s pop star, but this album is plagued with relatively dull supporting material even though nothing actually *bombs*.

Overall Album Score: 7.6 out of 10

Average Song Score: 7.9
Album Tilt: 7.5

True Colors (1986)

She's succumbing to rather severe sophomore-itis. How typical!

A Night to Dismember

Hat Full of Stars (1992)

The production is getting a little more interesting, and Lauper's still trying her mightiest to morph into a "serious" artist. The fact that she's a horrible composer continues to haunt her...

Overall Album Score: 6.8 out of 10

Average Song Score: 7.0
Album Tilt: 6.5
Artist Tilt: 7.0

Hat Full of Tar

Sisters of Avalon (1997)

The diversity, arrangements and even class is the greatest Lauper had ever been responsible for ... but that doesn't forgive the fact that these just aren't great songs. Sorry, babe!!

Overall Album Score: 7.1 out of 10

Average Song Score: 7.3
Album Tilt: 7.0
Artist Tilt: 7.0

Blisters of Frankie Avalon

At Last (2003)

Cyndi Lauper completely forgets about following pop trends and she releases a bunch of covers of songs from the 30s-60s ... Naturally, this is going to be one of her best albums (read: still not good).

Overall Album Score: 6.8 out of 10

Average Song Score: 7.3
Album Tilt: 6.5
Artist Tilt: 6.5

Mr Ignacio, You know nothing about music. Cyndi Lauper is the greatest musical artist of all time.

Cyndi is an honest and hardworking artist. She isn't selling out and wearing revealing clothing and singing about the orgasms she has in the closet or whatever. She is a true artist!!!! Those who are closed minded do not understand her and bash her. So take your closed minded, average, boring, second rate reviews and stick them were the sun don't shine. If you want to bash me back, that's fine, at least you'll be leaving the artists who don't deserve it alone for a few happy seconds.

Hi there - I am sure you are getting many Cyndi comments recently, as someone posted your site on one of the Cyndi boards.

As a Cyndi fan, you can probably guess that I disagree with your reviews, but that is not why I am writing. I'd like to request that you correct a couple of the release dates. SHE'S SO UNUSUAL was released in 1983, not 1982. And HAT FULL OF STARS is from 1993, not 1992.

I would like to thank you for not ignoring the albums she's released since the 80's. You don't have all of them on there... but most of them. I can only imagine how much you'd love ripping apart her Christmas album she released in 1998... :)

One comment I have about your reviews is that you referred to "Cyndi's writers" many times. She writes, or co-writes, most of her stuff (except the AT LAST covers album). So while I understand you don't like her music, at least she's writing it herself rather than hiring others. (And no, I don't need to hear about how you may think she should hire others).

On the flipside, you seem to really like my other favorite, Duran Duran.

Blah blah blah.. if you are still reading this, thank you for your time.
Colin

Since I am refraining from using profanity, per your request....please excuse my use of hokey terms..OK, I'll be brief, Hon..find something else to do because you don't know anything about music. You said you love music??? Well perhaps you like a certain style..but "geesh" your taste is so 'darn' limited it is 'pathetic'. As far as "who" actually buys Cyndi Lauper cd's...well you are so off base you should be embarrassed....her fans range from the age of 14 to 72..and you would be amazed at the numbers. Rye Beach Playland never had as many people present at one of their concerts in Westchester,NY as they did in August 2003 when 10,000 people arrived to see Cyndi Lauper perform. They rocked, they screamed, danced and loved every second of her outstanding performance. So Babe, get yourself another interest...you don't know what you are writing about..but you do have a pretty good writing style...ummmm change your subject matter and you may go somewhere....Julia

I must apologize for one thing. I had not read your review for the At Last album before finishing my post to you regarding the "Stupid Cyndi Mention Award". The web page was hanging when I tried to load it, and I sent the email prior to reading it. I therefore retract my statement about you not giving Cyndi credit for her vocal range.

Looks like you've stirred the bees nest. Apparently some of the Cyndi fans have mistaken you for a real reviewer. Fewer have mistaken you for a professional writer, though, or at least I hope that my fellow fans aren't so daft as to mistake this for competent journalism...or competent writing at all.

You like Peter Gabriel, so as Luke Skywalker would say, "I know there is still good in you".

You might want to take the journalism classes a little more seriously, though. Study harder, especially in the classes that deal with writing.

Good Luck,
JT.

I liked your reviews, for me they were funny and you made me laugh some even. People need to lighten up.

Hello,

I am trying to figure out why you would review every single album of a performer you do not care for. Are there not singers or bands that you do like that you want other people to listen to? Then maybe you should focus on reviewing them instead of trashing artists that you obviously do not care for.

So much of your information in the reviews is nothing but false. For example, Iko-Iko is not an African song at all, it never was. It is a Cajun song that was originally done by the Dixiecups. And Maybe He'll Know couldn't have been an attempt to remake Girls Just Wanna Have Fun as it was written years before Cyndi was even introduced to Girls...

I could go on, but you get the point I hope. Also, you spend all of your time bitching about hooks or the lack thereof, drum machines and if the song sounds like it comes from the 80's or not. You spend almost no time talking about the lyrics or the overall message of a song, as if these were not even important parts.

Overall, I am glad to have stumbled into your sad and pointless reviews, if for nothing else than to reaffirm to myself and other fans that not everyone gets Cyndi. Just like not everyone gets Madonna, Mariah, or (insert name of favorite songstress here).

Thanks for letting me rant and, horrible reviews aside, you might just have a future in comedy writing or as a ghost writer for children's books at the LA Kabala Center :-)

Have a wickedly wonderful day!

John F. Sullivan

At least give Cyndi Lauper credit for being one of the best live performers ever,

dkorba13@yahoo.com (dkorba) received March 25, 2006

Dude, why bother putting this up if you obviously don't have the ability to recognize someone's unique artistry and pure talent like the great Cyndi Lauper!? Check out her Live...at Last DVD (which has been certified Gold, by the way). I guarantee you will at least up your opinion of her a couple notches. She's one helluva entertainer and can sing circles around most of the contemporary wanna-bes of today! It's been said her performance suggests that 50 is the new 30. Beautiful woman in her mature years! And she hasn't lost a bit of her amazing voice. In fact, it's even better today. She's on Broadway, won an Emmy, music awards and sold over 60 mil. albums worldwide--not to mention, critically acclaimed albums since the 90s. I'm sure you're smart enough to know that sales figures do not dictate whether the music is good or not. Time After Time, which she also penned, is considered a contemporary classic and will be heard at proms and weddings for many de! cades to come. It's been covered about 90 times, including the jazz great Miles Davis. Not matched to Madonna in sales, but who cares? How many of her songs are still easily remembered? Madonna's a tramp who sold her sex appeal and can only sing certain songs due to her lack of range. I'm guessing you probably don't like her anyway. I shouldn't compare Cyn to Madonna.

'nuff said. You don't know what you're missing!!
