You write an interesting review, but absolutely subjective. This quality distinguishes you from a professional critic who has the expertise to draw the line between stuff he or she dislikes and artistic efforts which may be deemed worthy by a great many discerning individuals. I don't mean to say that just because something has a nice, pop flavor and sells products (as in the case of commercial jingles) has to be respected artistically just because lots of people like it. I'm skewing my comments toward a recording artist who has always been acknowledged as an ARTIST and not someone who "sucks." One could argue that Barry Manilow sucks, but you can't say that Colvin sucks and expect your commentary to be respected. Fat City is a great album. Only a couple of Shawn Colvin's work suck....and I do admit that she can blow it from time to time. She has a tendency to write beautifully rendered soulful, romantic tunes, or songs about failed romance, miscommunicatio! n of emotional isolation. Her Cover Girl album was a work of genius, turning several unlistenable songs (unlistenable by their composer/singers) and giving them an edge when necessary or a touch of beauty where it did not exist. She gave a great twist to a Dylan tune. Made a Sting song quite lovely. Even a duet with the overrated Mary Chapin Carpenter was nicely done. Whole New Your sucks, I'll agree. Sunny is a decent, catchy ditty but kind of lightweight, geared more toward popular sales than artistry.... For me, her Grammy for that tune was a mystery, when she's done so many better things.

Thanks for the review, though. You write well and are amusing, though a tad bit uninformed.
